Yes, the rumors are true. Finally, Samsung has officially announced that its new virtual assistant is called Bixby, and it will be launched along with Samsung Galaxy S8 later this month.
This will enable Samsung to take on heavy weights Apple, Google & Amazon in the field of Artificial Intelligence, starting with a voice enabled virtual assistant.
According to Samsung, Bixby is fundamentally different from other voice agents or assistants, thanks to deeper integration with applications. When an application becomes Bixby enabled, users can perform almost any task, which the application can do using touch interface, using voice commands only.
Samsung also claimed that Bixby will have increased context awareness that allows it to understand user intention and application state, and respond accordingly. It will also have better cognitive tolerance that will allow it to understand users even when they provide wrong commands.
Samsung plans to release Bixby in a step-by-step manner. At the launch of Galaxy S8, a subset of pre-installed apps will be Bixby enabled. This collection of apps will grow over time. Eventually, Samsung plans to release an SDK that will enable third-party developers to make their applications and services Bixby-enabled easily.
However, Smartphones are just the beginning. Since Samsung has such a wide range of hardware products (including TV, Air conditioners, Washing Machines), it will gradually be applied to all their appliances. For example, you’ll be able to control your TV or air conditioner using Bixby.
Samsung is surely betting big on Bixby, hoping that it will evolve from a virtual assistant on a smartphone to the interface that powers your smart home. Do you think Bixby will be a game changer?
